One thing has been missing from Kamala Harris' sudden rise as the Democratic choice for president against Donald Trump: contact with many reporters

During Kamala Harris' thrill ride that has upended the 2024 presidential campaign, journalists for the most part have been on the outside looking in. The vice president hasn't given an interview and has barely engaged with reporters since becoming the Democratic choice to replace Joe Biden.
That's about to change, now that it has become a campaign issue. But for journalists, the larger lesson is that their role as presidential gatekeepers is probably diminishing forever.

Iran’s president proposes an ex-nuclear negotiator as foreign minister. A woman is also on the list
- AP
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has proposed former nuclear negotiator Abbas Araghchi as the country’s new foreign minister and named a woman as housing minister. Araghchi, a career diplomat, was a member of the Iranian negotiating team that reached a nuclear deal with world powers in 2015. The deal later collapsed after the United States withdrew, but Pezeshkian has expressed his wish to revive it. If approved by parliament, Farzaneh Sadegh would be the first female minister in more than a decade. It is unclear, however, whether the hard-line-dominated will give her a vote of confidence.

Amateur runners race like Olympians along the same iconic route as competitors in Paris
- By HANNA ARHIROVA - Associated Press
Thousands of amateur runners got a chance to run like an Olympian in Paris. They tackled either a marathon or 10-kilometer race Saturday night along the same iconic route as the elite athletes who competed at the 2024 Olympics. The official website of the Paris Games says opening up the route to the public is a first for the Olympics. Combined for both races, more than 40,000 people signed up from 127 countries. A few hours after the male Olympians crossed the same finish line, the amateur runners set off as music and cheering crowds hyped them up. One runner says it was "the best way to end the Olympics."

American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return bronze medal after court mandates score change, IOC says
- By WILL GRAVES - AP National Writer
American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise after sport’s highest court said her score was judged improperly, the International Olympic Committee confirmed. The IOC announced it was reallocating the bronze from Monday’s women’s floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu after the International Gymnastics Federation said Saturday night it would respect the court’s decision and elevate Barbosu to third. The decision came less than 24 hours after the Court of Arbitration for Sport voided a scoring appeal made by Team USA coach Cecile Landi during the competition that had vaulted Chiles onto the podium.

Paris and the Olympics have changed each other during their summer fling
- By JOHN LEICESTER - Associated Press
During the 2024 Olympics, crowds from Paris to Tahiti have surprised even themselves with their enthusiasm for two and a half weeks of sports. They've plunged into the party like Léon Marchand parting the waters for his four swimming golds. Now, they're saying “au revoir” — see you again — as the Games drew to a close Sunday. After the 100-year wait since Paris’ last Games, no one can say when France’s capital and the Olympics will next embrace. But they’re both emerging changed — in some ways for the better — from their summer romance. As well as hitting high notes, Paris also experienced lows.

Israel broadens its evacuation orders after deadly strike on Gaza school-turned-shelter
- By WAFAA SHURAFA and SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press
The Israeli military has ordered more evacuations in southern Gaza after a deadly airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in the north. Sunday’s orders apply to areas in and around Khan Younis, including parts of an Israeli-declared humanitarian zone from which the military said rockets had been fired. Israel has repeatedly ordered mass evacuations as its troops have returned to heavily destroyed areas where they had previously battled Palestinian militants. The vast majority of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people have been displaced by the 10-month old war, often multiple times. Palestinian health officials say the strike on Saturday killed 80 people. The military disputed the toll, saying it had used precise munitions to kill 19 fighters.

In a remote Ugandan region, a sacred circumcision ritual faces a contentious test of purity
- By RODNEY MUHUMUZA - Associated Press
The ritualized circumcision of thousands of boys, known as Imbalu, began Aug. 3 in a remote corner of Uganda and will continue until the end of 2024. But this year the local king has opened the festivities to the public, with $120,000 from the Ugandan government and a corporate sponsor. The decision has raised eyebrows among many Bamasaaba, an ethnic group of 4 million. Can this ritual be turned into a carnival, put on for the gaze of foreigners? Or should it remain a sacred ceremony in which families quietly prepare their sons to face the knife with courage?

Where do you live? That's a complicated question for a California town with no street addresses
- By TERRY CHEA - Associated Press
Carmel-by-the-Sea is known for its white-sand beaches, storybook buildings and famous former mayor, Clint Eastwood. A lesser-known quirk of the wealthy seaside community in California is its lack of street addresses. But a century of address-free living may be coming to an end in the city of 3,300 residents, located about 120 miles south of San Francisco. In July, the city council voted 3-2 to move forward with a plan to assign street numbers. But the initiative has stirred opposition among many longtime residents, including the mayor, who voted against the measure.

Everyone agrees there's a homeless crisis in the US. Plans to address it vary among mayor candidates
- By JANIE HAR and GEOFF MULVIHILL - Associated Press
Homelessness is at the top of the agenda for candidates in mayoral races across the U.S. West. But they differ on whether it's OK to clear encampments that have spread as the crisis has deepened and how much to rely on temporary housing. In San Francisco, Mayor London Breed is facing serious challenges from four other Democrats in the November election. While they don't agree on how to fix the city's problem, they do agree Breed isn't effective, even as she launches a new round of crackdowns on encampments.

US colleges are cutting majors and slashing programs after years of putting it off
- By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH - Associated Press
Colleges large and small in the U.S. are cutting programs and eliminating majors to make ends meet. Among their budget challenges: Federal COVID relief money is expiring, operational costs are rising and fewer high school graduates are going straight to college. At St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, officials announced a plan to cut 42 degree programs and 50 minors, music among them. The move has created turmoil for students who chose the campus to study music. Humanities and the arts often top the list of cuts across the country. Some colleges are phasing out the programs. In others, students are abruptly forced to find a new school or change directions.

Needing win to extend playoffs streak, Matt Kuchar takes lead in Greensboro
- AP
Needing a victory to keep his FedEx Cup playoffs streak alive, Matt Kuchar shot his second straight 6-under 64 on Saturday to take the second-round lead in the rain-delayed Wyndham Championship. Kuchar is the only player to reach every postseason in FedEx Cup history. The top 70 will qualify for the playoff opener next week in Tennessee, with the 46-year-old Kuchar 113th. With players allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairways because of the wet conditions at Sedgefield Country Club, Kuchar moved up the leaderboard with late birdies on Nos. 5-7. Max Greyserman was a stroke back along with Cameron Young and Chad Ramey. Greyserman shot 60, leaving a 50-foot birdie putt 2 feet short on the final hole.
