Abstract
Stimulated by Husserl’s investigations and immersed in contemporary psychology, Merleau-Ponty developed a philosophical account of language acquisition. For him, word acquisition is not an isolated intellectual process of association. As in Wittgenstein and Augustine, it as an embodied, contextualized exercise that habituates the child to a form of life. His investigations focus on the ontology of first word acquisition. He wants to remedy the phenomenological failing that engenders both materialism and dualism, and he wants to identify the philosophy of mind that accounts for the display of intentions at work in ostension. To show the advantages of his analysis this chapter briefly considers Heidegger’s reflections on the same set of issues. Finally, it follows Merleau-Ponty into the phenomenology of intersubjectivity and language. What he calls, “flesh,” embraces others as well as one’s self and intertwines the visible body and the invisible intention. Flesh provides the basis for intentional display and the advent of speech.
