Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Director Confirms New Characters Will Be Teased For Potential Sequel (2024)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler hints at what teases will be given in the upcoming movie. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the sequel to 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which continues to tell a story about the classic Sega character. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features a leading cast including Ben Schwartz, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, Tika Sumpter, Tom Butler, Alyla Brown, James Marsden, and Jim Carrey. It is set for release just before Christmas, coming out on December 20.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Fowler discusses what potential teases will be at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to the director, he and his team have similar conversations as "fan debates online" surrounding what characters the franchise could show next. They are found "making great cases for 'it should be this one or that one.'" As for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Fowler says that "this movie is no different in terms of teasing new characters." It's fun to see the fan debates online about who's coming up next, who's going to be teased at the end of the film. We have a lot of the same conversations. We've all got our favorites on the filmmaking side, and we're all making great cases for 'it should be this one or that one.' It is fun to keep that anticipation. This movie is no different in terms of teasing new characters.

What This Means For Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The Movie Has To Do Well In Theaters For This Tease To Be Fulfilled

Fowler does not reveal what characters are in conversation to include in a potential Sonic the Hedgehog 4. It does sound like, however, that the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will feature a snippet of another major Sega character. The franchise has done this before with both Tails and Shadow, giving a glimpse at these characters and their designs before featuring them in the next movie.

If Sonic the Hedgehog 3 repeats this end-of-movie tease, the hope is that it will leave fans wanting more from the series. That said, whether Sonic the Hedgehog 4 gets made will highly depend upon how well the third film does in theaters. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the first of the Sonic movies to get a December release. This could either be to the film's advantage or detriment, as on the one hand, it is a prime release window, but on the other, it means the film will face more competition.

The Plan Is Wise For Marketing

While this plan could frustrate audiences should Sonic the Hedgehog 4 never get made, I think it is fundamentally a tactical decision to provide another tease. Giving a glimpse at another character in the universe is a smart, non-committal way to keep viewers engaged in the franchise without giving a complete cliffhanger. It also paves the pathway for future marketing opportunities, if Sonic the Hedgehog 3 just shows the face of a new character, it gives them room to announce the casting later, as they did with Reeves.
