house members elect our arriving for a closed briefing on capitol hill. boy, this is going fast. the new makeup of congress is coming into focus. took them forever to count some of those states and now it's moving with rapid speed toward january and the 119th congress will kick off in january. republicans have officially retained control of the u.s. house. the margin is small. the final seat count will depend on the outcome of several races still yet to be called. the victory completes a republican trifecta under president-elect donald trump. control of the white house, control of the u.s. senate, and now control of the u.s. house. how much majority we're still waiting to hear. a majority on the hill for a president we know has a big agenda. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus."

8:02 am

during elections yesterday, speaker mike johnson got unanimous support for another term as the top house republican. he will need to solidify that in a vote before the full house on january 3rd. republicans also voted to keep majority leader steve scalise, majority whip tom emmer in their spots and upbeat speaker johnson. >> the atmosphere on the hill is one of euphoria. the republican party is united and energized like i've never seen it. we need house and senate republicans to be in lock step on exactly the same page and we will be. >> harris: in the u.s. senate republicans elected john thune of south dakota to become the new majority leader. he will take over mitch mcconnell's spot. he gave a gracious acceptance speech. >> we'll make sure that the president and his team have the tools and support that they need to enforce border security laws and remove the violent criminals wreaking havoc in every one of

8:03 am

our states. we'll work to make america prosperous again by streamlining the bureaucratic machine and overturning costly biden-harris regulations. we'll have an ambitious agenda and will take each and every republican working together to be successful. >> harris: that was yesterday and he is speaking live right now. let's watch. >> after the game, my dad pointed that out and said you know, chris was open, wide open under the basket. and you should have given him the ball. that was my dad. he hated ball hogs. he wanted me and my siblings to be team players. if there was somebody else who had a better shot than you did that you got him the ball. that's my goal as leader. to pass the ball to the best position player, to empower everybody on the team. we have a lot of brilliant people in the republican conference brimming are ideas

8:04 am

and knowledge. it will be my job to make sure that they have the chance to use those ideas and that knowledge to strengthen our country and make life better for the american people. that's what i focused on as chairman of the senate commerce committee and as whip. and it is what i plan to do as leader. the leader's office will be a resource, not a roadblock for members seeking to achieve their legislative goals. that starts with empowering committees which will in turn insure that individual members at all levels of seniority have a real voice in the legislation that we consider. as whip i've consistently advocated for members' amendments resulting in over 100 votes this congress. a majority we can do better and i will continue my commitment to amendments as leader. the committee process is key to developing strong legislation but all members of the senate and not just the members of a

8:05 am

particular committee should have a voice in final legislation through amendments on the floor. members should assume amendment votes will be the norm. that will mean taking tough votes at times. that is part of our jobs. members should also expect the return to regular order in the senate next year. i will devote serious time in the summer to floor consideration of appropriations bills so we don't constantly wind up with an end of the year pile-up and problematic continuing resolutions. >> harris: we'll pull back from there a little bit. what he is saying is so critically responsive to what voters have been saying. i want to put a fine point on that. everything waits until the end of the year and they don't get everything done and pushed like a can down the road. the senate majority leader elect, john thune, is saying he doesn't want to see any more of that. he will begin to make some

8:06 am

changes immediately when the new congress starts on january 3, 119th it will be. senior congressional correspondent chad pergram is on capitol hill. we were showing moments before we could go to the floor live john thune laying out what his senate leadership would look like and we heard some of it with personal background with what his father had taught him. chad. >> good morning, harris, everyone will immediately study the relationship between thune and the next president. the big test is how thune will navigate the senate traps and confirm mr. trump's nominees quickly. republicans are not worried. >> he put out a statement in strong support of actually john thune and the time president trump spoke about the leadership elections was immediately afterwards and was in support of thune. thune supported trump overwhelmingly. >> republicans are looking to see how thune and president-elect trump work together. there was a strained

8:07 am

relationship between mr. trump and outgoing senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. thune was once critical of the former president but worked to patch things up. thune is getting high marks from democrats also. >> i've served with senator thune in this chamber for many years and i'm glad to say we found common ground on numbers of different issues. we have gotten along well and worked together in the past. i look forward to finding ways to work together in the future. >> republicans secured the house majority overnight and it looks like house speaker mike johnson will hold the gavel in january despite grousing from conservatives. he has the support of the new president. >> he came and visited with the house republican conference as you saw and gave a ringing endorsement of me and our leadership team. that's helpful. the unity aspect of this is very important. we have to work together. i called leader thune today and congratulated him on his victory. >> house republicans will have a

8:08 am

narrow majority. that caused headaches for republicans over the past two years and it's risky for the house gop tov too many vacancies continuing their tenuous hold on power. >> harris: what is being said behind the scenes about that? the president-elect wants to choose who he thinks is best to really shake things up. that was part of his promise to voters. we are looking at a situation where people said in large numbers they don't want what's there now. they want something different. so he may have to tap some members of the house to get that done. >> that's going to be a problem if they lose too many members there. in the senate you have a lot of these republicans not saying necessarily that they will be a cart blanche blank check there for president-elect trump. they are saying we'll do due diligence and confirm the people. when thune was asked about matt gaetz he deferred and said it is a question for the chairman of

8:09 am

the judiciary committee. >> harris: republican senator shelley moore capito. she became number four senate republican as policy committee chair elect. and you are moving up from vice chair now of that committee. congratulations on that. first of all, i don't know if you could just hear chad pergram's reporting and my question with him. how much concern is there that people are being tapped for the president's team? this was part of the promise that he made. can you deal with that on the hill? >> absolutely we can. we just look at the republican senate conference. we'll lose two senators, jd vance to the president seamarks which is great, and then senator rubio to secretary of state. i think it helps in the confirmation process particularly for senator rubio, well liked across the aisle and within our conference. i think he will be -- it will be

8:10 am

a smooth confirmation for him. it will be an appointment by the governor and a little different in the senate. we can replace and so we're not as concerned about it in the senate. i understand the concerns in the house. you want good people and president trump knows a lot of the folks that are serving because he has campaigned with all of them. >> harris: talk to me a bit about policy. your focus going in now that you have gotten a bump up in the senate. senator, i'm curious where do you begin? we've heard president-elect trump for months talk about what he would do in the gap to kind of line things up for january 20th talking with foreign leaders, so an and so forth. what are you looking at? >> you have to look at the mandate from the american people and on the top issues. certainly the border. we'll go to that quickly and we will be aggressive with it. it will include border wall money, also include the remain in mexico policies. the policies that president trump had in place that kept

8:11 am

those numbers down. the american people want to have that immigration situation, illegal immigration situation solved. so we'll go there. also go to the economy. i think you will see us move forward towards renewing the tax relief bill that we passed in 2017 under president trump. we'll go there. that's an opportunity, i think, for us then to get at those high prices, to make sure that people are -- wages are going up. that we have full employment. all the things we saw as a result of that act and allow businesses to grow. so i think you will see us go there and also see the president on the international front assert himself in a very strong way. i think he is already reaching out to international leaders. he can do it now without any kind of congressional input. i think he is in consultation with committee chairs. in terms of where i am, i'm on environment and public works.

8:12 am

we have seen regulations stymieing development in jobs. that's where we want to go, too. we have a lot on our plate but we know the direction we'll go. the president campaigned on it. but also because i think that's what the american people responded to when they went to the ballot box. >> harris: senator capito, you hit on those when you said renew the tax breaks, that tax bill has been something that struggling families have wondered about. if that's now a top priority, i wrote that down because that's important. that would be as the president-elect said in his previous presidency promises made and promises kept. thank you for being on the program this morning. july 13th, 2024, remember? he told us to fight, fight, fight. the entire nation republican, democrat, independent. it was just 124 days ago now.

so what was on donald trump's mind the day a would be assassin shot him? in butler county, pennsylvania, trump was hit in the era whisker's breath from death. i spoke with him just hours before that. >> so it's interesting. where we are in the world. i'm so glad we got to spend a good time talking about america's position -- >> this is the longest interview i have done in a long time. >> harris: voters elected him as the nation's next president. but the danger for donald trump and americans not over. iran is accused of launching a murder for hire plot against the incoming commander-in-chief. you know that, we reported. that's where we are as the president-elect sharpens his policies and gathers his white house team to take over in the new year. at his mar-a-lago home in florida he laid out much of his vision for america.

not like a campaign rally type of situation. he went in depth. and including the goal that he was going to and is going to work with democrat-led cities to recover from the rampant crime and reverse the biden-harris border crisis. the talk then was about focusing on the voters. he wants to reach across the aisle. i wonder if those blue state and blue district voters will reach back and take that hand? all of that just four hours before the first assassination attempt on donald trump. you can watch the full extended interview in one place, fox nation. download the fox nation app if you haven't already. many of you already watch. tune in. president trump's sweeping victory was a jarring wake-up call for democrats and the party is now scrambling to figure out how to fix what looks to be very broken. maybe they just don't care what

the voters want. obviously they don't. they kicked their guy joe biden off the ticket and put kamala harris on the ticket and she couldn't beat trump. two democratic governors hatched a formal scheme to resist the president-elect policies. not everybody in the party is on board with that idea. >> i think it is pretty clear that pritzker and johnson are following the same political track as harris. we'll tell you what is important to you rather than listen to where your concerns are. changes your struggle with missing teeth forever. it changes how you eat, how you feel, and how you enjoy life. clearchoice network doctors have changed over 150,000 lives with dental implants. because a clearchoice day changes every day. finance your new smile for as low as $148 a month per arch for qualified patients. schedule a free consultation.

the election. >> there is a disconnect with the party elite versus everyday democrats working trying to get by and raise families and trying to go to work every day. we know that that messaging from the democratic party's elite failed miserably in 2024. to think that you can keep replicating that same message and get a better result is just a definition of insanity. >> harris: power panel now. jeremy hunt, veterans on duty chairman and former army intelligence captain. mark penn, ceo of stag wel. great to have you hear. mark when you hear about that being a louder voice than the voters in your party for that point of criticism from that democratic leader, what do you say? >> well, i think you have to look at the election returns and it is interesting.

8:23 am

the republicans won working and middle class vote. the democrats those making under $30,000 and those making over $1 hundred thousand. so the party does have to remake itself if it will have a chance to have a comeback and it will have to regain the trust of working and middle class voters which a lot of the policies obviously lost that trust. one other things these governors, many running for president catering to the democratic base or what they think it will look like three or four years from now. it may or may not be in the same kind of mood. >> harris: jeremy, it seems a little odd to me that they would focus on things like resisting trump rather than trying to make life better in their own state. >> yeah look, harris. donald trump broke this democrat party. they are in an identity crisis

8:24 am

now. latino and black voters are started to leave them. you look at the working class voters who left them. they don't know what to do. you have some democrat leaders who are a little more introspective saying what are we doing wrong here. a lot of them like these two governors are doubling down on the same failed message that lost them the election. you wonder at what point will they come back to reality and actually start talking to people again? it is also so tone deaf. these governors as you mentioned these are sanctuary states and care more about illegal immigrants than they do actual american citizens. states that had lockdowns, talking about safeguarding democracy when they locked down their states and trampled on many fundamental rights during covid lockdowns. crime is rampant. i don't think these are the greatest messengers for the democratic party now. >> harris: if you are a donor big or small and see harris's campaign went into debt paying beyonce and many others, the

way that you voted because it went against my very livelihood and i won't be around you this holiday. >> i completely understand her point. when people feel that someone voted not only against their families but against them and against people that they love, i think it's okay to take a beat. >> harris: take a beat. people are taking their advice. senator jd vance's ohio opponent posted this. my aunt called asking about thanksgiving plans during the conversation she mentioned she voted for trump. i told her my home is not open to traitors and i would not go to theirs. that post has 7 million views. a huff, inc.ton post column reads my husband and family voted for trump and i'm canceling thanksgiving and christmas. a pair of "new york post" headlines calling out the hate. big name libs call for --

democrats plans to shun trump voting family will tragically drive division. lisa boothe. you know what? this is sad. what does it say to our children who watch adults act this way? >> it is incredibly sad. i have had this happen to me. most of the audience if they are trump supporters have also had it happen to them. i have people i love ridicule me and cut me off for my support of donald trump and also was even worse during covid for not getting vaccinated. people turned their backs on me during that period of time because i took a position unpopular. i was right but at the time it was a dangerous position to have. intolerance always goes in one direction. the intolerance is what we heard there. these people saying they want to cut off their trump supporting neighbors and friends and family. the beauty about this election is despite the fact that so many trump supporters across the

country have been called names more americans agree with us than them. trump supporters can walk into the holiday seen they have fellow americans behind them and we sent the rest of the country a message we'll return to patriotism and common sense. >> harris: you know, it is interesting, too, because the left was the side that was always given the people's voice, whatever, and they had, you know, they were really first with low income and mid income workers. the party is in disarray right now. that shouldn't affect people who are going to thanksgiving dinner. it really is interesting. it is easy to understand why the electoral message hey you racist nazi scum, vote for me was met with crushing defeat, a quote. democrats and liberal media wanted to damage the republican nominee but friendly fire killed the democrats' chances.

conservatives understand left wing ideas, they just don't agree. progressives can't articulate conservative ideas without characterizing them as self-ish, greedy, im humane. they don't think right wing ideals -- they think they are depraved and inex cluesable, it's plain and clear. >> most of the research as well. after 2016 liberals were three times more likely to unfriend or block people over political belief. american enterprises study in 2021 showing that republicans were more likely to have democrat friends than democrats were republicans. we saw during covid, half of democrats wanted to put the unvaccinated in government camps. this isn't me saying this. this is study after study demonstrating the intolerance

from the left. the irony is their lives are about to get better under donald trump. the economy is going to be better. safer in the streets because we'll stop this invasion at the southern border. the world will become more stable as we're already seeing by people recognizing there is a new sheriff in town with donald trump. they don't see it now but their lives will become better. my response to this when i received it is look, i love you and i will love you no matter what but i'm not changing my beliefs for anyone. these are my beliefs and i hope you come around. if you need me i'm there for you. you have to stand strong in your beliefs. i think we were redeemed this election cycle and showing that more americans love this country, want unity and want to put us on a better track. >> harris: i love the way you put that. if you love america i say this all the time you have to love the people who are in america and the americans. that's what you are talking about right now. it is interesting as we go forward how that will work itself out.

i'm almost thankful it is up against this precious holiday season, the birth of christ. i'm thankful because that's the time of miracles happening and i believe that can happen. and it really needs to because that's why people didn't tell the truth or want to take surveys this time around. they didn't want to be talked about. you see how they voted. if you had any doubts, there were many democrats who voted for trump. they just didn't talk about it. lisa boothe, great to have you in "focus." we have had a busy hour. i want to thank everybody for watching "the faulkner focus."
