West Indies 97/7 in 28.2 Overs | West Indies vs South Africa, 2nd Test Day 1 Cricket Match Live Score - The Times of India (2024)

18:43 (IST) Aug 16

The West Indies, still 63 runs behind, exactly the figure of South Africa's 10th wicket partnership, will look upon their seasoned all-rounder Jason Holder to provide stubborn resistance, but a responsible hand from the other end is also crucial. However, the opening hour of play could prove pivotal, as is often the case in Test cricket. Also, it will be interesting to see how the track behaves this time around. South Africa's formidable pace attack will aim to exploit the new ball, seeking early breakthroughs to deny the home team any chance of gaining the upper hand. A riveting day is up on the cards, folks! The first ball of Day 2 will be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (1400 GMT). Stay tuned.

18:41 (IST) Aug 16

A mirroring trend was seen on the opening day, as the new ball did a lot of mischief and left the batters unanswerable. However, as the ball softened and lost its bite, and the pitch evened out, batting became noticeably easier as the day wore on. Looking ahead to Day 2, we can expect much of the same, with minimal chances of rain in the forecast around noon. Conditions are expected to remain largely identical, with sunny skies prevailing for most of the day, and the remaining match days.

18:39 (IST) Aug 16

But also, we did see some batting resiliencies amid the procession of wickets. South Africa’s 10th wicket stand that added 63runs between Dane Piedtand Burger kind of frustrated the West Indian bowlers for a fair bit and helped the Proteas to 160 after being 9 down on a paltry 97. Early contributions from Stubbs, Bedingham, and Verreynee proved to be crucial but they couldn’t extend their starts to a big score. Dane Piedt proved why he can be a handy component as an all-rounder. The spicy deck was no different for the hosts as they were reduced to 97/7 but this collapse was followed by the gutsy stand between Jason Holderand Gudakesh Motiewhen the chips were down.

18:37 (IST) Aug 16

Shamar Joseph, the local lad, lit up the match with a sensational 5-wicket haul, keeping the contest wide open and bringing the West Indies right into the thick of it. Ably supported by Jayden Seales, these two spearheaded the destruction, proving to be the chief architects of the West Indies’ bowling dominance. On the other side, South Africa'sWiaan Mulder'sclinical 4-wicket burst, backed by a handy two-fer from Nandre Burger, tore through the West Indian top and middle order in no time. The spinners, though not getting much help from the deck, could afford a sigh of relief as the pacers had already done the heavy lifting.

18:35 (IST) Aug 16

Test cricket returned after 13 long years in Guyana and it has nothing been any short of an entertaining affair. Recapping Day 1, it was a paradise for seamers, with the pitch offering generous movement both ways. The new ball proved particularly potent, and fast bowlers from both sides capitalized on the conditions to keep batters under constant pressure. In a day dominated by pace, 17 wickets tumbled across both innings and the quicksaccounted for a whopping 15 of these, while the tweakers claimed a mere two, underscoring the pitch's tilt towards seam bowling.

18:32 (IST) Aug 16

They say that Test cricket is a slow-paced format, and rightly so. It's a gruelling five-day battle that sways back and forth, challenging every player's resolve and endurance, making it well and truly the toughest format of the sport. But the way this game match has panned out so far, things have unfolded briskly. On that note, hello and a very warm welcome to our coverage of Day 2 of this series decider second Test match at the Providence Stadium, Guyana.

18:29 (IST) Aug 16

... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...

03:13 (IST) Aug 16

Right then, that's a wrap from Day 1 of this second Test at Guyana. The day surely belonged to the bowlers, especially the seamers across both sides. 17wickets fell in the first day itself and it has wide opened this game pretty early on. West Indies, coming into Day 2 will aim to construct again as they still trail by 63 runs with Jason Holderfighting a lone battle being unbeaten on 33. Whereas, South Africa would definitely aim to prevent the West Indies from getting the lead. This game is still hanging in balance and we surely will get the result this time around as the weather too, is favourable for the remaining match days. Day 2 begins at 7.30 pm IST (1400 GMT). But you can surely join us for the build-up before the first ball. Cheers!

03:11 (IST) Aug 16

Wiaan Mulderis up for a quick chat. Hesays that he missed a bit on the full side and even got a couple of wickets from it, so, it wasn't his best effort with the ball. Adds that he watched Shamar Joseph in the first innings and tried to replicate it. Mentions that it just worked out today and there was some more movement up in Trinidad. Mentions thathe enjoys bowling in the West Indies but just wants to focus on Test cricket.

03:09 (IST) Aug 16

Earlier in the day, South Africa's decision to bat first backfired as they lost wickets regularly. The pitch's variable bounce and movement troubled the Proteas batters, with three managing scores in the 20s but failing to convert. The last wicket partnership between Dane Piedt and his partner, Nandre Burger provided a crucial fightback, adding 63 runs and stretching the innings till the end of the second session. This helped South Africa post 160, still considered below par for the conditions. The West Indian pace attack, spearheaded by Shamar Joseph's impressive five-wicket haul, was the architect of South Africa's struggles. Bowling in tandem, Jayden Seales provided excellent support, claiming three wickets of his own. The duo expertly exploited the favourable conditions. As the day wore on and the pitch began to settle, batting became marginally easier against the tweakers. Gudakesh Motie, despite not looking entirely in rhythm, managed to claim the final wicket.

03:08 (IST) Aug 16

Sensing an opportunity, South Africa sought quick wickets to intensify the pressure. Nandre Burger and Kagiso Rabada probed the West Indian batters with testing deliveries. Burger, in particular, made an immediate impact by dismissing two battersin rapid succession. Building on this momentum, Wiaan Mulder tore through the middle order, claiming an impressive four-wicket haul. This relentless assault left the West Indies reeling. Keshav Maharajthen ended the day by taking one to his name after a period of a blossoming partnership between Holder and Motie.

03:07 (IST) Aug 16

It was Jason Holder, their seasoned all-rounder, who rose to the occasion. In Test cricket, chasing 160 may seem modest, but it often requires more than a lone warrior. A couple of solid partnerships could provide the buffer needed for a team to mount a comeback. As the ball softened with use, batting conditions gradually improved. Jason Holder found a dependable ally in Gudakesh Motie, and together they resurrected the inning. The pair dug in, each holding their ground with determination by adding 41 crucial runs together after a procession of wickets. Their primary objective was to guide the team safely to stumps without any further loss of wickets but Motie perished right on the cusp of the day's end.

03:05 (IST) Aug 16

Following their impressive bowling performance, the West Indies were looking for their batters to step up and deliver. Instead, their batting lineup faltered under pressure, with half the team back in the pavilion before the scoreboard even touched 50. The extent of their struggle was starkly evident, as Keacy Carty stood alone in reaching double figures in the top order. In light of the West Indies' recurring batting woes, the team was in dire need of a steadying hand to navigate them through troubled waters.

02:58 (IST) Aug 16

STUMPS, DAY 1 - SESSION 3 SUMMARY - 28.2 Overs, 97 Runs, and 7 wickets. Well, folks, Test cricket has returned to this part of the world after 13 long years and surely, it has been an entertaining first day of this second and final Test in Guyana.South Africa would be mighty pleased with the way they came strongly with the ball after a dismal batting display, while the hosts would have expected sustainability with the bat. But the day belonged to the seamers as 15 wickets were snagged by the seamers out of the total tally of 17 wickets across both innings and sides.
