And unburned natural gas contains another potent culprit: methane. A 2022 study by Lebel and his colleagues found that gas stoves leak this unburned methane, which is not directly harmful to human health but accumulates in the atmosphere, where it traps heat and contributes to climate change.

Some cities have even considered banning or restricting natural gas appliances from existing homes and businesses. The main purpose of these efforts is to mitigate climate change, however infinitesimal in the whole, by supposedly making buildings zero-carbon.
